SALSA IN SERBIA
Salsa came to Serbia five years ago – it was brought by Cuban musicians and dancers who recognized in Serbian people a mentality similar to their own, so they decided to stay in Serbia. Today there are many clubs in Belgrade and Novi Sad where salsa music is played regularly and where the atmosphere reminds a lot of the one from 'Casa de la Musica' in Havana.
The Cuban salsa style is the most popular in Serbia. This is certainly most owed to Choma Sumbu Garcia, a Cuban who brought salsa dance to Serbia and who organizes Latin Stage in 'EXIT' festival in Novi Sad every year and Jenny Perdomo Gonzalez who has been playing salsa music for eight years now in one of the most popular local radio stations, 'Radio B92'. The great contribution to such popularity of salsa music has also been made by a Serbian, yet Cuban salsa band Son Cuba Son that was filling in salsa clubs to the top for many years both in our country and abroad. Many excellent salseros practiced their first salsa combinations with music played by DJ Branko (DJ Grande B) in now historical salsa club 'Radovic'. During the last year, Serbian salseros made it in the international scene: Latina Blanca Team by Jovan Milosavljevic will compete in December in 'World Salsa Championship' in Orlando, Florida and DJ Sonero became the first Serbian DJ and instructor who is regularly invited to internationl salsa events.
Today you can dance salsa almost every night in some of Belgrade clubs. Salsa Congress Serbia is a direct result from the ever growing popularity of this dance in our country and a real opportunity for local dancers to meet world-famous names of salsa dance and music. |
